Overpopulation - Causes, effects, and remedies.

It is always the people of a country who build a nation by their toil and sacrifice. They defend their freedom at the cost of their own lives and earn honor for their country through their intellectual pursuits. But at times, the number of people becomes trouble, breeding poverty and retarding progress. This happens when a country has an excess of population that is when it has to feed and clothes too many persons with too little resources. Such a state of disparity between population and resources is known as overpopulation.

The main problem is that the modern world faces today is the population explosion. Increasing the population is a danger for the present world. There is a shortage of food, yet each year, there are many more parts of the world. Million and millions of people die of hunger. The rate of development in many countries has slowed. Unemployment is on increase. There is a shortage of facilities like housing, food, clothing, education, transport, hospitals, schools, and colleges. The cities are full of beggars. Our country Pakistan is a glaring example of overpopulation.

The records show that at the birth of Christ, the world population was about 200- 300 million. The number doubled by 1650. It again doubled by 1850 and came to 1000 million. Now the world population is about 5000 million. It is likely to double only in forty years. With two or three centuries, there will be no room on the earth for the people to stand.

The main reason for the population increase is the difference between birth rate and death rate. Science has helped us to control the death rate. But at the same time, the birth rate has not been checked. In western countries, the people who have checked the birth rate has been brought down by modern medicine. But no attempt has been made to limit the size of the family.

If we want to improve this situation, we should take two steps at the same time. We should increase production; we should check the birth rate. In the industry, we should try to increase production by better management and planning. We should find out new markets inside as well as outside the country for increased products. In agriculture, we should adopt modern ways of cultivation. We should use fertilizers to increase production. We should save our crops through the use of good pesticides. We should also take steps to limit the size of the family. We should create a desire among the individual for that. The idea of family planning should be popularized. Artificial ways and medicines should be used to check undesirable pregnancies. Health centers should be set up for the guidance of the people. Unless the problem of population is solved, no progress is possible.
